This study used photographic capture-recapture of 554 free-roaming dogs in a Brazilian urban area and found that dogs clustered significantly near community feeders and commercial food outlets. The median distance to community feeders (1.2 km) was significantly shorter than to commercial food outlets (1.4 km, p < 0.01), indicating that direct human food provision is a primary driver of canine spatial distribution. These findings highlight the need for managed feeding sites away from high-traffic areas to improve animal welfare and reduce zoonotic disease risks.
