This study weighed home-packed lunches from a 3rd-grade class on Long Island over five days and found that children consumed 67.3% of solid foods (32.7% plate waste) and 94.6% of sugar-sweetened beverages. Caloric, sodium, cholesterol, and fiber intake were significantly reduced from what was packed, and macronutrient distribution remained stable, indicating even consumption across food items. Clinically, packed lunches fell within calorie and sodium recommendations but were high in simple sugars and low in fiber and fruit/vegetable intake, highlighting ongoing nutritional concerns.
