This study measured radiation scatter in an ERCP suite using anthropomorphic phantoms and found that increasing distance, reducing fluoroscopy time (by decreasing frame rate or pedal actuation), and using a 0.5-mm lead apron each significantly reduced scatter. For example, shielding reduced scatter by 97.2% for both average and large phantoms, and decreasing frame rate from 8 to 2 fps reduced scatter by about 75% without compromising image resolution. These findings provide concrete data to support the three pillars of radiation safety (distance, time, shielding) in ERCP.
