This systematic review of five observational studies found that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) significantly improved autism symptoms in children, as measured by reductions in Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), and Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) scores. FMT also improved gastrointestinal and sleep disturbances. However, no randomized controlled trials were identified, and the authors conclude that rigorously designed trials are needed to establish safety and efficacy.
