This study uses a system dynamics model to project that diabetes prevalence in Jamaican adults will rise from 12% in 2018 to 20.9% by 2050, and obesity from 28.6% to 39.2%, if current trends continue. Achieving WHO global targets to halt this rise by 2025 would require unrealistic changes (e.g., tripling physical activity and a 30% caloric reduction). The model shows that a combination of upstream population-level interventions (reducing sugar-sweetened beverages, ultra-processed foods, increasing physical activity) and downstream high-risk interventions can substantially reduce future burden, supporting a coordinated multi-sector approach.
