Children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) have significantly lower cardiorespiratory and neuromuscular fitness compared to healthy age- and sex-matched controls, even in the era of biologic drug therapies. JIA patients were less physically active and spent more time sedentary, but disease activity was not associated with fitness levels. These findings suggest that JIA patients should be actively encouraged to engage in physical activity as part of their multidisciplinary care to reduce long-term health risks.
