This randomized, self-controlled trial in 7 Quarter Horses with podotrochlear syndrome and osseous cyst-like lesions of the navicular bone found that adding core osteostixis to navicular bursoscopy significantly reduced lameness scores at 24 weeks compared to bursoscopy alone (P = 0.0254). Five of 7 limbs treated with core osteostixis were sound at 24 weeks versus only 1 of 7 bursoscopy-only limbs. The procedure shows promise for horses refractory to medical management, though new DDFT tears were noted in 3 of 7 osteostixis-treated limbs.
