This study measured stable carbon isotope ratios (δ¹³C) in barley, cucumber, maize, and tomato under phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), and combined P/Fe deficiencies over two weeks. Results showed complex, species-specific, and tissue-specific δ¹³C responses that were poorly correlated with physiological parameters, and combined deficiencies produced unpredictable patterns. The authors strongly discourage using δ¹³C as a universal predictor of nutrient stress, as it cannot reliably detect or distinguish between different deficiencies, especially when combined.
