Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient absent from unfortified plant-based foods, placing individuals on vegan and vegetarian diets at high risk of deficiency. Deficiency can cause neurological symptoms (fatigue, memory impairment, depression) and complications in pregnancy even without anaemia, making supplementation and regular monitoring critical. The authors recommend daily intake of 4–20 µg/day of vitamin B12 from certified supplements or fortified foods, and highlight women of child-bearing age, pregnant/lactating women, older adults, and transitioning vegetarians as highest-risk groups.
