This study resolves a long-standing taxonomic debate by showing that the fjord-dwelling frenulate Oligobrachia webbi is genetically identical to the seep species Oligobrachia haakonmosbiensis, based on 99% mtCOI sequence identity from museum and new topotype specimens. Sediment geochemistry from the type locality (Kvalsund, Norway) reveals sulfide concentrations rivaling those at seeps, indicating that Arctic fjords can sustain chemosymbiotic fauna without subsurface methane reservoirs. The findings suggest that Arctic chemosymbiotic species are habitat generalists rather than seep specialists, and may exhibit mixotrophic nutrition with seasonal shifts between chemosynthesis and uptake of photosynthetically derived organic matter.
