This retrospective study of 70 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients found that behavioral restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic led to significant decreases in muscle mass (34.7 vs 34.0 kg, p<0.001) and grip strength (17.2 vs 16.2 kg, p=0.026), and significant increases in fat mass (15.5 vs 16.2 kg, p=0.014). Activities of daily living decreased by a mean of 44% and exercise by 20%, with the change in muscle mass being the only independent factor associated with change in exercise (β=−0.335, p=0.007). The findings suggest that maintaining muscle mass through continued exercise is important for RA patients even under behavioral restrictions.
