**Background:** The study aimed to identify the effects of diet history—specifically consumption of fruits/vegetables, yogurt, onions, and garlic—on the occurrence and severity of COVID-19 symptoms in recovered individuals. The rationale is that nutritional status significantly impacts immune function, and certain foods have known immune-stimulatory or antiviral properties.
**Methods:** A random sample of 346 individuals (212 women, 134 men; aged 20–65 years; 131 from rural areas, 215 from urban areas) who had recovered from COVID-19 in Damietta Governorate, Egypt, was selected. Illness duration was 14–21 days for most (52.3% of subjects). Data were collected via an electronic questionnaire in Arabic using Google Forms. The questionnaire captured personal information (gender, location, age, illness duration) and diet history. Participants rated their COVID-19 symptoms as asymptomatic, moderate, or severe. The study focused on four 'hard' symptoms: fever, body pain, cough, and dyspnoea. Food intake was categorized into three levels: no intake, little intake (weekly or monthly), and intensive intake (daily or more than once a week). Statistical analysis used SPSS version 11.5.1 with Pearson's correlation coefficient (R).
**Key Results:** Overall, symptoms were reported by 88.1% of participants eating none of the investigated foods, 85.54% of those with little intake, and 85.55% of those with intensive intake. For fever: 87.5% of the no-intake group experienced fever (moderate or severe), compared to 88.76% in the little-intake group and 84.74% in the intensive-intake group. A significant correlation was found between fever occurrence and onion consumption (R=0.141, p<0.01) and total food consumption (R=0.135, p<0.01). For body pain: 100% of participants with no intake experienced moderate or severe body pain, versus 98.8% with little intake and 98.6% with intensive intake. No significant correlations were found for body pain. For cough: 87.9% of the no-intake group experienced cough, compared to 75.9% (little intake) and 77.9% (intensive intake). A significant correlation was found between garlic consumption and cough severity (R=-0.116, p<0.05). For dyspnoea: 78.3% (no intake), 78.2% (little intake), and 80.6% (intensive intake) experienced symptoms. A significant correlation was found between total food consumption and dyspnoea (R=0.062, p<0.05). Most participants reported moderate fever (52%), cough (63.6%), nasal congestion (59%), runny nose (53.8%), sore throat (49.1%), and diarrhoea (53.2%). Severe body pain was reported by 67.6% and severe smell/taste loss by 48.6%.
**Clinical Implications:** The study suggests that consumption of specific functional foods (fruits/vegetables, yogurt, onions, garlic) may slightly reduce the occurrence of some COVID-19 symptoms, particularly body pain, which was universal in the no-intake group. However, the differences between intake groups were modest (roughly 2–3 percentage points for overall symptoms), and most correlations were weak. The authors acknowledge insufficient participants as a limitation. The findings provide limited support for the role of diet in COVID-19 symptom mitigation but do not establish a strong clinical recommendation. The study was conducted in a single Egyptian governorate, limiting generalizability. Further research with larger samples and additional foods is recommended.
