This study identifies horizontally transferred genes (HTGs) in aphid and whitefly genomes as promising targets for RNA interference (RNAi)-based pest control. Using plant-mediated virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), the authors show that knocking down bacterial- and plant-origin HTGs reduces aphid survival by 30–40% and whitefly survival, while silencing fungal-origin HTGs decreases aphid reproduction. Importantly, no negative effects were observed on ladybug predators, suggesting HTG-targeted RNAi is a safe and species-specific approach for controlling hemipteran pests.
