This study investigated how the antibiotic growth promoter virginiamycin and a novel alternative, ceragenin CSA-44, affect the gut bacteria of broiler chicks. Neither compound altered the types of bacteria present in the cecum, but both changed the metabolites those bacteria produced, particularly those involved in energy and amino acid synthesis. The findings suggest that antimicrobial growth promoters may work by altering bacterial function rather than bacterial community structure, which has implications for developing effective non-antibiotic alternatives.
