This study of 31 clinically healthy German shepherd dogs found that Giardia duodenalis colonization was associated with shifts in gut microbiota composition, including increased Erysipelotrichales and Lactobacillales and decreased Gammaproteobacteria in positive males, but did not substantially alter overall microbial ecology or hematological markers of disease. Giardia-positive males showed higher cCRP levels than negative males, suggesting a mild pro-inflammatory state, though all values remained within normal ranges. The authors conclude that antiparasitic treatment should be considered cautiously in asymptomatic dogs to preserve the Giardia–microbiome–host equilibrium.
