This study developed and validated a mobile open-circuit respiration head-hood system for measuring gas exchange (O₂ consumption, CO₂ and CH₄ production) and heat production in alpacas in the Andean Plateau. Validation showed good agreement between the respiratory quotient method and carbon-nitrogen balance for heat production (402 vs. 398 kJ/kg BW⁰·⁷⁵), with a fasting heat production of 250 kJ/kg BW⁰·⁷⁵ and a methane conversion factor (Yₘ) of 5.5%. These findings confirm that alpacas have a lower basal metabolic rate and lower maintenance energy requirements than small ruminants, providing critical data for nutritional management and greenhouse gas inventory purposes.
