This narrative review examines how early-life factors (diet, exercise, BMI, age at menarche/thelarche, radiation exposure, and others) during childhood and adolescence influence the risk of proliferative benign breast disease and breast cancer in adulthood. Key findings include that higher adolescent fiber intake reduces risk, alcohol consumption before first pregnancy increases risk, and chest radiation during childhood dramatically elevates breast cancer risk (up to 25.8-fold for Hodgkin lymphoma survivors). The review underscores that breast tissue is especially vulnerable between menarche and first full-term pregnancy, making early-life exposures critical targets for prevention strategies.
