This study evaluated whether adding a blend of hydrolyzable tannins, carvacrol, and cinnamaldehyde oil (1.5 g/kg DM) to energy or mineral supplements could improve nitrogen metabolism and modulate the rumen microbiome in grazing Nellore steers. Energy supplementation alone increased forage intake, digestibility, and nitrogen retention, but the phytogenic blend did not improve nitrogen utilization or microbial synthesis efficiency and actually reduced total dry-matter digestibility and the abundance of several beneficial rumen bacterial groups. The findings indicate that while energy supplementation is effective for tropical grazing systems, this specific phytogenic blend at the tested dose offers no advantage and may impair digestibility.
