This study investigated how suramin affects the renal VEGF-A/VEGFR axis in a rat model of short-term (3-week) streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Suramin reduced VEGF-A protein expression in the renal cortex, decreased elevated VEGFR-2 mRNA expression, and restored endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation of renal arteries to non-diabetic levels. These findings suggest suramin may serve as a pharmacological tool to modulate VEGF-A signaling in early diabetic nephropathy research.
