This study found that palmitic acid (PA), the most common saturated fatty acid, selectively suppresses the expression of fast-twitch myosin heavy chain (MHC IIb) in mouse muscle cells by inhibiting the transcriptional activity of MyoD through phosphorylation. The effect appears to involve protein kinase C (PKC) rather than TLR4 signaling. These findings suggest a direct molecular mechanism linking intramuscular lipid accumulation to the selective loss of type II muscle fibers in sarcopenia.
