This study shows that nitrogen starvation triggers conidiation (spore production) in the nematophagous fungus Purpureocillium lavendulum, while nitrogen supplementation promotes vegetative growth. The switch between growth and reproduction is co-regulated by nitrogen availability and histone H3K14 acetylation, mediated by the acetyltransferase PlGCN5. These findings provide new insights into how nutritional signals epigenetically control fungal development, with potential implications for improving biocontrol agents against plant-parasitic nematodes.
