This retrospective case-control study identified a strong association between a missense variant in the SERPINF2 gene (encoding alpha-2 antiplasmin) and delayed postoperative hemorrhage (DEPOH) in Scottish deerhounds. Dogs homozygous for the T/T genotype had a 1235-fold higher odds of DEPOH compared to those with the C/C reference genotype (OR=1235; 95% CI=23-6752; P=0.0005). These findings suggest that genetic testing could identify susceptible dogs that would benefit from prophylactic antifibrinolytic therapy before surgery.
