This study compared stable isotope values (δ13C and δ15N) from paired blubber and skin samples of 171 southern hemisphere humpback whales to determine if the two tissues can be used interchangeably for dietary analysis. Significant differences were found between tissues for both isotopes, with blubber showing greater variability that could lead to different interpretations of trophic position and diet plasticity. The findings caution against interchangeable use of blubber and skin in stable isotope-based dietary studies and highlight the need for standardized methodologies in cetacean foraging ecology research.
