**Background:** Burnout Syndrome, recognized by the WHO in 2000 and formally included in ICD-11 in 2022, is characterized by energy depletion, increased mental distance from one's job, and reduced professional efficacy. It affects an estimated 10% of workers globally, with projections of nearly $1 trillion in lost productivity annually and 120,000 deaths from burnout in the United States alone. Despite the availability of assessment tools such as the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI, used in ~88% of published burnout research) and the newer Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT), the authors note a striking lack of formal, technology-enabled organizational tools for burnout prevention and mitigation. Most existing solutions are either self-help resources or AI tools (e.g., Erudit AI, RAD AI, Cerner) that are limited in scope, targeting specific sectors or relying on narrow data sources.
**Methods:** In 2022, the IRSST-UC3M Research Chair (funded by the Regional Institute for Occupational Health and Safety of the Community of Madrid) launched the 'Creativity for Digital Transformation C4DX-OHS' challenge. University students in the Community of Madrid were invited to submit proposals for digital transformation projects to address Burnout Syndrome. Each proposal was required to include: a title and author details, a two-page description, associated development costs, functional and non-functional requirements, analysis and design documentation, and a 6-minute video presentation. A total of 12 proposals were submitted and evaluated. Evaluation criteria were weighted as follows: technical assessment of the digital transformation project (60%—6 points out of 10), covering innovation, software development quality, project management quality, analysis quality, and design quality; and assessment of the creative idea in occupational safety and health (40%—4 points out of 10), covering appropriateness to the call and originality in OHS.
**Key Results:** The 12 proposals and their key characteristics were: (1) Virtual Personal Assistant 'Charlie'—6 months, €62,579.96, app-based, both individual/collective use, both identification/mitigation; (2) BonusBreak—9 months, €74,127.63, standalone, both use, both identification/mitigation; (3) Mental health monitor—12 months, €115,930.00, app, individual use, identification only; (4) Free time booking app—9.87 months, €74,277.00, app/web, both use, both identification/mitigation; (5) BreakBuddies—9 months, €243,232.99, web, both use, mitigation only; (6) FieldDay—1.75 months, €113,015.00, app, both use, mitigation only; (7) LightUp—12 months, €136,368.44, app/standalone, both use, mitigation only; (8) Burnout WT—8.25 months, €46,949.79, standalone, both use, both identification/mitigation, and the only proposal using an existing standard (BAT); (9) TrusTec—5.5 months, €121,048.94, standalone, both use, both; (10) Bright software—5.5 months, €118,032.72, app/website, both use, both; (11) Hubture—12 months, €100,420.00, app/web, both use, both; (12) Burnband—5.6 months, €118,673.00, app, individual use, both. Estimated costs ranged from €46,949.79 (Contribution 8) to €243,232.99 (Contribution 5), and estimated development times ranged from 1.75 months (Contribution 6) to 12 months (Contributions 3, 7, 11). Eight of 12 proposals used mobile applications, 4 used websites, and 4 used standalone approaches. Notably, 11 of 12 proposals did not incorporate any existing validated burnout assessment standard.
