Iran has achieved Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 for both under-5 and neonatal mortality at the national level, with U5MR declining to 15.2 and NMR to 11.8 per 1,000 live births by 2017. However, substantial provincial inequalities persist, with NMR ranging from 5.2 to 16.2 across provinces, and 17 provinces had not yet met the SDG 3.2 neonatal target. If each province matched the reduction rate of the best-performing province in its region, the national NMR could fall to 5.2 and approximately 92,000 newborn lives could be saved by 2030.
