This study found that wild house mice in Australia are significantly less sensitive to zinc phosphide (ZnP) than previously reported, with an LD50 of 72–79 mg/kg body weight compared to the previously assumed 32.7 mg/kg. When mice were offered ZnP-coated grains at the current registered dose (25 g ZnP/kg grain), mortality was only 42%, but increasing the dose to 50 g ZnP/kg grain resulted in 94% mortality when no alternative food was available. These findings suggest that the current ZnP bait loading may be insufficient and that a higher dose per grain could improve control efficacy and reduce bait aversion.
