This study evaluated the impact of searching clinical trial registries on the results of systematic reviews with meta-analyses. Among 101 reviews that had not searched registries, additional trials were found for 63%, but only 20% had results usable in a meta-analysis. Including these new trials did not change the meta-analytic effect estimates on average, suggesting registries are currently underutilized due to poor trial registration and results posting.
