This paper argues against the blanket elimination of race from medicine, contending that while race is not a biological reality, it remains indispensable for studying and addressing the health effects of racism. The authors apply Link and Phelan's fundamental cause theory to show that racism is a fundamental cause of health inequalities, making race a necessary epidemiological and clinical variable. The paper concludes that critically employing race is essential for anti-racist medicine, even as race correction and biological race assumptions should be eliminated.
