This policy statement from the World Hypertension League, International Society of Hypertension, and Resolve to Save Lives strongly recommends against conducting, funding, or publishing research that uses spot urine samples with estimating equations to assess individual sodium intake in association with health outcomes. The method has large systematic and random errors, is not reproducible, and produces spurious J-shaped associations with cardiovascular disease and mortality that are not seen when using the gold-standard method of multiple 24-hour urine collections. The statement is endorsed by 21 health organizations and calls on journals and funding agencies to reject such studies, as the continued use of this flawed methodology has created unwarranted controversy about the health benefits of dietary sodium reduction.
