This secondary analysis of the LOVIT trial found that the increased mortality previously attributed to vitamin C in sepsis patients was actually caused by the abrupt termination of vitamin C after 4 days, not by the vitamin itself. During the 4-day administration period, there was no difference in mortality between groups (RR=0.97), but in the week after termination, mortality was nearly doubled in the vitamin C group (RR=1.9, p=0.004). The findings suggest that vitamin C should be continued throughout the period of critical illness, and that the LOVIT trial should not be interpreted as evidence against vitamin C therapy.
