This study found that clinical staphylococcal isolates (both S. aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci) frequently form persister cells—a subpopulation that is transiently tolerant to antibiotics—which may explain treatment failures even when bacteria are antibiotic-susceptible. High persister frequency was observed in stationary growth phase and was significantly associated with the presence of icaAD biofilm genes, though not with biofilm strength, specimen type, or staphylococcal species. The findings highlight the clinical importance of persister cells in recalcitrant staphylococcal infections and suggest that antibiotic choice may influence treatment outcomes.
