This study analyzed 1,498 unstructured free-text swab site location descriptions from food production environments to develop a standardized metadata schema for surface swab sites in built environments. The schema uses existing ontologies (ENVO, PATO) and defines five informational facets (structure, subpart, material, condition, orientation) to improve machine-readability and interoperability of genomic surveillance data. Implementing this schema supports faster outbreak investigations and enables quantitative evaluation of surveillance efforts, such as identifying that wheels and brooms had significantly higher proportions of *Listeria monocytogenes* positivity.
