The Emory mouse (Em/J) develops late-onset cortical cataract at 6–8 months and has been proposed as a model for human age-related cataract. Whole-exome sequencing of Em/J and ancestral CFW mice excluded over 450 known cataract genes and identified three novel variants in Prx, Adamts10, and Abhd12, with the Abhd12 variant predicted to be functionally damaging. These findings suggest Abhd12 as the most promising candidate gene for the Em cataract phenotype and indicate that Em/J mice may model the cataract component of human PHARC syndrome.
