This study screened bacteria from extreme and polluted environments (saltpans, hot springs, car wash effluents, oil refinery effluents, tannery dumpsite soil) for their ability to degrade microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a potent hepatotoxin produced by cyanobacteria. Ten bacterial isolates, including Arthrobacter sp., Acinetobacter junii, Bacillus thuringiensis, and Lysinibacillus boronitolerans, were able to grow using MC-LR as a sole carbon and nitrogen source, indicating degradation potential. Notably, all isolates lacked the known mlr gene cluster, suggesting a novel degradation pathway, and several showed optimal growth at alkaline pH (8–9), making them promising candidates for bioremediation of cyanotoxin-contaminated waters.
