This study investigated how early-life hay provision and presentation method (bucket vs. pipe feeder) affected dairy calves' behavioral response to a novel total mixed ration (TMR) at weaning. Calves with prior hay experience, especially those fed from a bucket, showed reduced neophobia—faster latency to eat and fewer startle responses—compared to forage-naïve controls. Despite these behavioral differences, all calves consumed similar amounts of TMR, suggesting that forage-deprived calves are motivated to access novel forage and that early hay exposure improves feeding efficiency.
