This case series of 7 teenagers (12–16 years old) with recurrent or refractory iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) found that successful eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection led to sustained normalization of hemoglobin, serum iron, and ferritin over a median follow-up of 20 months after stopping iron supplements. Hemoglobin rose from a median of 6.3 g/dL at baseline to 14.2 g/dL at final follow-up (P < 0.001), and no patient had recurrence of IDA. The findings support a causal role for H. pylori in adolescent IDA, possibly amplified by increased iron demands from growth spurts and sports activities.
