This protocol describes the ABC-QI Trial, a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial across 12 NICUs in Alberta, Canada, evaluating whether collaborative quality improvement strategies (EPIQ) reduce length of hospital stay in moderate and late preterm neonates (32–36 weeks' gestation). The intervention involves implementing respiratory and nutritional care bundles using team building, education, mentoring, and collaborative networking. If effective, this approach could reduce practice variation, improve outcomes, and lower healthcare costs for this large but understudied preterm population.
