The PoppiE trial is a multicentre randomised controlled trial testing whether reducing iodine intake from prenatal supplements (20 µg/day vs 200 µg/day) in pregnant women who already have adequate iodine from food alone improves cognitive development in their children at 24 months of age. Observational data suggest both low and high iodine intakes during pregnancy may harm child neurodevelopment, creating uncertainty about universal supplementation in iodine-sufficient populations. This trial aims to provide definitive evidence on whether current universal iodine supplementation policies should continue or be replaced by a more targeted approach based on individual iodine intake.
