This study compared the muscle exudate proteome of the autochthonous Nero d'Abruzzo pig breed with commercial-hybrid (PIC) pigs using label-free LC-MS/MS. A total of 100 proteins were differentially expressed between the breeds, with fatty acid synthase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase significantly upregulated in Nero d'Abruzzo pigs. These findings suggest that the Nero d'Abruzzo breed has enhanced fatty acid synthesis capacity and superior antioxidant defenses, likely reflecting its semi-wild rearing environment and genetic background.
