This study tested whether liver-specific deletion of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in female mice affects mitochondrial function and protection against high-fat diet-induced fatty liver. Contrary to the hypothesis, inducible liver ERα knockout did not worsen hepatic steatosis, alter mitochondrial respiration or reactive oxygen species emission, or change oxidative phosphorylation protein levels, regardless of whether knockout was induced before or after sexual maturity. The findings suggest that hepatic ERα is not required for female protection against diet-induced fatty liver or for sex differences in liver mitochondrial function.
