This study evaluated 120 provitamin A (PVA) biofortified maize hybrids for resistance to aflatoxin contamination. The researchers found that hybrids with higher PVA content accumulated less aflatoxin, with a significant negative genetic correlation between aflatoxin and β-carotene (r = −0.29, p < 0.0001) and PVA (r = −0.23, p < 0.0001). Eight inbred lines were identified that combine desirable traits for breeding high-PVA, aflatoxin-resistant maize, offering a dual strategy to combat vitamin A deficiency and aflatoxin exposure in sub-Saharan Africa.
