This cross-sectional study of 1,948 Korean adults with diabetes found that higher dietary intake of vitamin A, carotene, and retinol was associated with lower diabetic retinopathy (DR) prevalence in unadjusted analyses, but these associations became statistically insignificant after adjusting for age, sex, hypertension, HbA1c, and diabetes duration. The authors conclude that dietary intake parameters alone are insufficient to assess DR risk and that serum vitamin A levels are more appropriate. The study highlights that previous positive findings may be due to inadequate adjustment for key confounders like diabetes duration, glycemic control, and hypertension.
