This randomized placebo-controlled pilot trial in 66 older adults (≥65 years) found that consuming Camelina sativa oil-enriched crackers (providing ~2.6 g ALA daily) for 12 weeks significantly increased serum alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) concentration compared to placebo (p<0.01). However, no significant changes were observed in inflammatory markers (except a decrease in IL-18 in the placebo group) or serum lipid profile, though trends toward greater reductions in total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides were noted in the Camelina group. The findings suggest Camelina oil-enriched functional foods can effectively raise ALA levels in older adults, but larger studies are needed to confirm effects on inflammation and lipid outcomes.
