This study reveals that hogfish have specialized photoreceptor cells beneath their chromatophores that express SWS1 opsin, which is sensitive to short-wavelength light. The chromatophore pigment selectively absorbs this light, so the photoreceptors detect changes in pigment aggregation and dispersion, providing sensory feedback to fine-tune color change. This is the first evidence of a dedicated dermal photoreceptor cell in vertebrates and suggests a closed-loop feedback system for dynamic color change.
