This study of 18 individuals with gyrate atrophy found that hyperornithinaemia (median 800 µmol/L) and biallelic OAT variants were present in all cases, with common features including high myopia (10/18) and nyctalopia (5/18). Two-thirds developed pre-senile cataracts and one-third had macular oedema, while dietary compliance was suboptimal in most patients. The findings underscore the need for multidisciplinary care and highlight that current management remains challenging due to poor compliance and limited evidence for treatment strategies.
