The pigment from Aspergillus nidulans, identified as rhodopin, shows anticancer activity against human larynx carcinoma (HEp-2) cells, with an IC50 of 208 µg/mL. Combining the pigment with 10 Gy γ-radiation enhances its efficacy, reducing the IC50 to 115 µg/mL, while maintaining low toxicity to normal Vero cells. This combination increases apoptosis and upregulates pro-apoptotic genes (P53, Caspase 3) while downregulating the anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2, suggesting a potential radiosensitizing strategy for laryngeal cancer.
