This systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 cohort studies found that female sex, parental myopia, longer axial length, lower spherical equivalent, and less outdoor activity time are significant risk factors for myopia onset in children. The burden of myopia is higher in underprivileged countries compared to developed countries. These findings highlight the need for targeted prevention strategies focusing on modifiable environmental and behavioral factors.
