This study investigates the effect of hexamine cobalt(III) chloride (Hac) on the interactions and phase behavior of four globular proteins (BLG, BSA, HSA, OVA). Using SAXS, SLS, and DLS, the authors found that Hac induces only weak reentrant interactions without liquid-liquid phase separation or condensation, unlike its strong condensing effect on DNA/RNA. The absence of phase separation is attributed to Hac's large ionic radius and its binding mechanism requiring hydrogen bonds, which are not sufficiently available on protein surfaces.
