This observational study examined correlations between stress hormones (cortisol, DHEA-S) and motivational factors for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in 43 female adolescents with psychiatric disorders. It found significant correlations between cortisol levels and distressing urges, sensation seeking, and the cortisol/DHEA-S ratio with external emotion regulation and motivation to stop NSSI. The main limitations are the small, single-sex sample and the lack of a control group, which limits generalizability and causal inference.
