This study compared gut microbiota in free-living hibernating bats from two natural sites with different winter ambient temperatures using 16S rRNA sequencing. The central result was that a higher winter ambient temperature was associated with decreased gut microbial alpha-diversity, while microbial community structure (beta-diversity) remained similar across sites.
